چکیده
Objective: To establish the effects of orange juice (pulp free) on residual gastric volume, when it was used during preoperative period till 3 hours before the induction of general anaesthesia. Method: In this comparative study 150 patients were divided into two groups of 75 each. In the first group patients were kept fasting after midnight, while in other group the patients were allowed 200 ml of standard pulp free orange juice till 3 hours before induction of general anaesthesia. Residual gastric volume was collected from the stomach via an orogastric tube after induction of anaesthesia. Volume was noted and pH measured. Before induction patients were asked about their feeling of thirst and hunger or any other problem. Thirst and hunger were categorized into mild, moderate and severe. Results: There was no significant difference in volume and pH of residual gastric volume in the two groups. Moreover in group II there was notable reduction in the feeling of thirst and hunger as compared to the fasting group. Conclusion: Use of orange juice till 3 hours before induction of general anaesthesia does not compromise the safety regarding regurgitation and aspiration, while it considerably reduced the feeling of thirst and hunger from fasting.

Gastric fluid volume and pH in elective inpatients. Part I: Coffee or orange juice versus overnight fast.
In order to assess the effect of preoperative oral fluids, with and without ranitidine, on gastric fluid volume and pH, 300 elective surgical inpatients, ASA physical status I or II, were randomly assigned to one of six groups. The three groups that received placebo are discussed in this paper, Part I, and the three that received ranitidine in Part II. Between two and three hours before the sch...

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of rootstocks on fruit sugars, organic acids, and carotenoids. The contents of sugars and organic acids in fruits were determined by HPLC. Total acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), and pH value of the juice were also evaluated. Total carotenoids and chlorophylls contents were measured using a spectrophotometer. The content of ethylene in fruits was ...
متن کاملDeterminants of liquid gastric emptying: comparisons between milk and isocalorically adjusted clear fluids.
BACKGROUND Although current preoperative fasting guidelines apply restrictions to drinks containing milk because of delayed gastric emptying, the safe volume of milk that can be consumed up to 2 h before surgery on a theoretical basis has not yet been defined. We aimed to determine whether delayed gastric emptying depended mainly on the total amount of calories irrespective of compositional dif...
متن کاملThe effectiveness of cimetidine as a preoperative medication in increasing gastric pH and decreasing gastric volume in obese patients.
The obese patient presenting for surgery is at high risk for developing the pulmonary acid aspiration syndrome due to a large volume of acidic gastric contents. Cimetidine, an H 2 receptor antagonist, reduces gastric secretion and increases gastric pH. In the following study, cimetidine increased gastric pH in the obese patient, but had no effect on gastric volume. By increasing gastric pH, cim...
متن کاملComparison of the Effect of Pomegranate Juice and Orange Juice on the Level of pH of Dental Plaque
Background and aim: reduction of dental plaque pH is an effective factor in the incidence of dental caries. One of the common methods for assessment of the cariogenic potential of food products is the study of plaque pH changes in the oral environment. The present study was performed due to the importance of dental plaque and its known complications and also the increase in consumption of indus...
